New Artwork Series by Phil Stallard, ‘Sydney Haikus’

We are pleased to bring you the second instalment of our ‘Artist Studio Series’ with, Phil Stallard documenting his new artworks, ‘Sydney Haikus’.

Sydney Haikus is a series of paintings by Phil Stallard. The focus for these works has been North Head, a place the artist has explored for many years. It dominates the skyline looking east from Balmoral and has a huge significance for our first nations people.

“In the 80’s I would rock climb up the sheer walls, and scramble down to the waterline to the old fishermen’s tracks but I recently visited the lookout and was surprised that I couldn’t feel the magic – hence this series. I have tried, through the act of painting to uncover the truth of the place”. Stallard

The video show the progress of the last painting in the series called “Road to North Head (with pink cloud)”, this is a warts and all documentary on the painting’s journey, from early sketches on the floor, its shows the tangents and dead ends and the final result. Enjoy.
